Growing Freedom Part 2

From the 1890s to just before World War II, The Farmer’s improvement Society of Texas (FIS) focused its efforts on instruction on improving farmer skills, thrift, cost savings, cooperative selling and purchasing, solidarity, and paying off debt. It's leaders taught the cost saving and nutritional benefits of growing your produce, cultivating fruit trees on your property, and practicing garden to table eating. Similarly, FIS leaders championed entrepreneurship and selling the surplus you produced directly to urban dwellers at farmers markets for cash, a practice common today. They would tell their members, plan your garden around what you eat every day. Focus on nutritious vegetables and herbs that make up most of your meals. By planning different crops for different seasons, your family can harvest fresh food in season. This cuts grocery bills while improving what you eat. The basic idea is simple: grow what you need and only buy necessities with cash. When you grow your own food, you spend much less at the store and avoid using debt. You can use these savings to pay off debts or build up your savings account.
