In 1890, five visionaries - Nathan Jones, Johnny Booker, R.L. Hines, William Isaac, and Robert Lloyd Smith - started the Farmer's Improvement Society of Texas (FIS). They created this group to help African Americans break free from sharecropping, where they were stuck working land they didn't own. The FIS had a simple but powerful strategy: grow your own food, sell what you don't need, and stay out of debt. Their ideas still make sense today. Getting out of debt starts with growing your own healthy food. A good home garden isn't just a hobby - it helps your wallet and your health by providing daily food and possible extra income from selling surplus.
