The Farmer Improvement Society of Texas (FIS) started in 1889 in Oakland, Texas. It went from 14 members at the start to 21,000 members in various states by 1909. The FIS’ mission had been to get its members out of debt and into entrepreneurship purchasing and selling goods. It taught members a love for rewarding and cost-saving subsistence gardening and practical and profitable entrepreneurial activities such as the direct sale of surplus crops and honey direct to consumers. When you grow more than you need, sell it at farmers' markets, to neighbors, and to local food retailers. This turns your garden from a money-saver into a money-maker - especially helpful when money is tight. A garden gives you three big advantages: saving money, eating better food, and earning extra cash. By putting in work instead of borrowing money, you build something valuable that pays you back every growing season.
