Part 1 On Carver

“And God said. Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” Genesis 1:29.

“There is no shortage of green vegetables and weeds that are good to eat and have medicinal properties” George Washington Carver

Like Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver (1864-1943) saw agricultural education as a tool that let lower caste farmers thrive in the political hostility and economic hardship of the Jim Crow South. Much of his life's work took shape in the bulletins he published through the Agricultural Experiment Station at Tuskegee, a steady run of practical pamphlets that reached farmers from 1898 to 1943. Over the next several days I am running a short series built from those bulletins, threaded with my own interests, which I will share along the way. Enjoy.
