Simple Steps to Make Great Compost
George Washington Carver taught farmers this straightforward composting method:
Build a compost pen as large as you can manage
Layer muck and leaves on the bottom, then add a load of barnyard manure, and repeat until full
Cover with a rough shed to prevent rain from washing away nutrients
Add vegetable scraps, non-citrus fruit peels, wood ashes, rags, paper, or anything that decays quickly
Use this compost to dramatically increase your crop yields.
When planting, Carver recommended breaking the land deeply (eight to nine inches) and thoroughly. He suggested using twenty tons of compost per acre on medium land and twenty-five tons per acre on very poor land. One could plant directly on top of the fertilizer and cultivate normally.
