In May 1898, Carver sent a letter to Tuskegee President Booker T. Washington discussing the potential for expanding fruit cultivation on campus. He explained that rather than purchasing new plants annually, he intended to use propagation techniques to multiply their existing trees and vines. Carver expressed his commitment to developing Tuskegee's gardens into exceptional growing spaces by focusing simultaneously on food preservation and increased production. His regenerative soil methods proved remarkably effective.
