Here another contribution to our ongoing series “Food Rebels” which looks at the contribution of activists who have sought to feed the poor, improve public health, and build economic and political power by reforming food production and distribution, as well as access and consumption. From 1971 to 1972 Dr. Alvenia M. Fulton wrote “Eating for Your Health and Strength,” a column in the Black-owned-and-operated Chicago Defender about health, healing, and nutrition. The column covered topics based on what she learned from her elders growing up on a farm in Pulaski, Tennessee, graduate training, study of current medical literature and practices, and her practice as a naturopath. Here responses to her reader’s questions provides insights into her experiences, studies, and thoughts on healthcare. Over the next several days we discuss Dr. Fulton’s thoughts on issues facing us today.
