Freedom Farm Cooperative

With a $10,000 donation from Measure for Measure, a charitable organization based in Wisconsin, Fannie Lou Hamer founded the Freedom Farm Cooperative in 1969.in Sunflower County Mississippi. A vision of an ideal independent community motivated Fannie Lou Hamer’s Freedom Farm project. Economist Jessica Gordon Nembhard argues that Hamer had championed a self-help ideology that had reemerged and influenced black nationalists in the mid-to late 20th century and the cooperative movement of earlier black farmers. At the same time Hamer had contempt for government assistance programs for the poor. Hamer seemed to think dependence on bank loans had been different from dependence on white planters as a sharecropper. As though banks will not foreclose on loans organizations took out as a strategy to feed, house and clothes poor people..
