With a $10,000 donation from Measure for Measure, a charitable organization based in Wisconsin, Fannie Lou Hamer founded the Freedom Farm Cooperative in 1969.in Sunflower County Mississippi. A vision of an ideal independent community motivated Fannie Lou Hamer’s Freedom Farm project. Economist Jessica Gordon Nembhard argues that Hamer had championed a self-help ideology that had reemerged and influenced black nationalists in the mid-to late 20th century and the cooperative movement of earlier black farmers. At the same time Hamer had contempt for government assistance programs for the poor.
