Beginning in the late 1960s, the Black Panther Party for Self Defense (BPP) established chapters in urban communities across the United States. Panther co-Founder Huey P. Newton said, “the Black Panther Party will not let the malady of hunger keep our children down any longer.” In my book that statement and their programs makes the BPP food rebels. BPP food programs went further than meeting the needs of black children; they included a free breakfast program for children, free grocery bag giveaways for families, and more.
