Amiri Baraka similar to Elijah Muhammed had is foods of emphasis and culinary proclivities. For example, Baraka called for the consumption of only fruit juices and fruit in observance of his birthday and eating natural cakes and fruits like watermelon in celebration of the birth of a newborn. Moreover, like Dr. Alvenia Fulton he recommended honey as a healthier sweetener than white cane sugar. Baraka and other black nationalist of the 1960s and 1970s denounced the consumption of products with white sugar as a strategy to strengthen their bodies and those of their offspring. Baraka also held chauvinistic views such as women as principally responsible for cooking and feeding their families.
