Fasting, A Spiritual Discipline Part 1

Dr. Alvenia Fulton (1893 to 1999) was an ordained minister and master herbalist. She had been a pioneering teacher on the importance of cleansing the colon with herbs and fasting. She lived for nearly 100 years. From 1971 to 1972, Fulton wrote “Eating for Your Health and Strength,” a column in the Black-owned-and-operated Chicago Defender. The following is her response to a reader’s question about fasting; a topic will be covering over the Lenten season. I share here answers in a paraphrased format when necessary to make it more accessible and as direct quotes as often as possible. Fulton self-described yourself as a practitioner of naturopathy, “a drugless system of healing using natural foods, fasting, internal and external cleansing of the body, exercise, and fresh air.”  She wrote, fasting is “an ancient art of healing and health giving” and a necessary practice for the majority of Americans who eat a diet full of toxins and virtually no nutritional value.
