Naturopath Dr. Alvenia M. Fulton wrote the column “Eating for Your Health and Strength” in the pages of the Chicago Defender from 1971 to 1972. Fulton shared with her readers what the medical literature had to say about the relationship between food, learning, and productivity. Citing the research of Dr. George Watson and his book Nutrition and Your Mind others, Fulton taught that a poor diet and or an abnormally functioning digestive system is the cause of the majority of illnesses including behavioral health. She wrote that a healthy person on a nutrient rich diet will always outperform one on a poor diet on cognitive and physical tasks. The list of athletes who Fulton consulted on nutrition and supplements included Gayle Sayers, Bill Walton, Ernie Banks, and Muhammad Ali.
