Stumping and Eating in Florida
During his 2012 race to the White House, Republican candidate Mitt Romney made a visit to a popular family owned Cuban food company in Medley located in Florida's 17th congressional district in Miami-Dade County called Conchita Foods. This was an event with the goal of identifying with Latino voters through their food and thus gaining their support on Election Day. In 2008, Republican candidate John McCain won more Floridian districts than his opponent Barack Obama but lost the state because he lost the crucial 17th district which has a high concentration of Latino voters. The 2008 census indicates that 62.4% of the district is made up of Latinos. Since then, that number has grown and has continued to increase to almost 65%.
