In turn of the century South Carolina, the majority of African Americans had a plan to accumulate capital and farm land. Around the same time 160 African Americans United and selected a leader and went on to create a cooperative. They purchased nearly 900 acres on which they planted rice, corn, beans, and other food crops. The cooperative proved productive and they remained united. All the above examples happened during reconstruction and before the implementation of black codes in the political backlash of the period in history known as white redemption which started about 1894.
