Barber Allen Mederios was born in 1903 on Martha’s Vineyard. Tourism is a vital economic engine for the island. Mederios like many of her contemporaries, work for a family that had been vacationing on the island for some 20 summers. Her job had been to get the family summer home on the Vineyard ready for their arrival and it also serve as the family cook during their summer vacation. The mother of the family had been a medical doctor who came to the island with her three children and husband. “I opened her house, I got it already, her cooking was done when she come in with her family which included three children and her husband everything was cooked, all the beds were made and everything,” says Mederios. “She liked me, and so I work for her for, oh 20 summers before she sold her place.
So here are today's takaways: First, successful entrepreneurs provide needed services. Second, they provide those services better than their competitors. Third, when you provide great service, you will have repeat customers and new ones too. Just be sure you’re not underpaying yourself as compared to your competitors.
